Austin is the capital of Texas and known for it’s famous music scene off 6th Street. It is near Hill Country and home to the University of Texas. There are many amazing swimming holes and outdoor activities. Austin is a great place to visit, whether you love food, nature or music, there is something for everyone!
One of the first things to cross off our Austin bucket list was the famous Franklin’s Barbeque. This place has a four-hour line and is well worth the wait. Anthony Bourdain helped make this BBQ joint world famous when he stopped in on his show No Reservations in 2012. The line really isn’t that bad… there is a food truck, offering breakfast tacos and coffee while you wait. They have a stack of folding chairs for you to take a seat. It’s like a tailgating party, so bring some beers and snacks and get to know your line neighbors. Bring an umbrella if there is a chance of rain. They sell out by 12pm-1pm, so get in line around 9am, 8am of you want turkey. They open at 11am!
As a Southern California native, In-N-Out Burger was a nostalgic must-have on our list since they recently branched out to Austin. If you are not privy to the SoCal burger nostalgia, then try Austin’s P. Terry’s Burger Stand. If you don’t want to wait so long for barbeque, try la Barbecue or Salt Lick. Tacos are also famous in the Austin food culture. Torchy’s Tacos is a buzzy taco chain that is well known in the area. The good news is there is good food all around Austin. Plan to eat a lot!
You will want to see the famous murals. If you are not sure where to go or where to look, they offer local tours. South Congress is a great area to stay and you will stumble across a lot of murals. You can see the downtown skyline and walk around for good food and shopping. This is also a dog-friendly city so don’t hesitate to bring the pup. Museum of The Weird, Cathedral of Junk, Hamilton Pool, Zilker Metropolitan Park are also bucket list places to see. You will love it and want to plan your trip back before you even leave.
